Psychology and Mental Illness - Stigma and Research Papers

Psychology and Mental Illness - Stigma and Research PapersThe topic of mental illness and stigma has been extensively covered in the media and I have tried to come up with some interesting facts about it. There is a new study out today that suggests that our society has not done enough to educate people about mental illness and how it can affect them in a negative way. People often do not realize that just having mental illnesses can be harmful to a person. However, research shows that this is the case. One of the biggest misconceptions about mental illness is that it is a result of some hidden agenda. This is simply not true, as mental illnesses are not caused by someone's character or bad acts. In fact, it may be linked to family problems, which could also be life threatening. Research also shows that many mentally ill people end up committing suicide because they feel that their life is meaningless. Even though this is not true, the stigma that is attached to mental illness will ha ve an impact on the way a person thinks about themselves and how they will react to life.It is also important to note that there is a stigma associated with mental illness and that this stigma should not be left out of mental health treatment. Our society is now so used to seeing people with mental illness that many people will simply ignore them, not wanting to interfere with their good things in life. They might even refuse to talk to them or interact with them socially. These are not good things and should not be happening to a person who has a serious illness. Therefore, it is very important for society to start accepting people with mental illness as normal. It is important to realize that if they get help, they will be better off and they will also be happier. It is important to remember that mental illnesses are not caused by people's actions and are in fact related to our environment. As long as these relationships between environment and mental illnesses are changed, the imp act will change as well. When it comes to public awareness, there are two very famous mental illness research papers. One of them was from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and they are entitled 'Stigma and Mental Illness - The Role of Expectations of Social Support.' In this study, researchers found that people who are diagnosed with mental illness were seen as less competent than those without a mental illness. This fact alone shows that people often see mental illness in a negative light and that this is something that needs to change. The other is the more famous one, 'Social Norms, Shame, and Stigma: A Study of Co-Morbidity among Depression, Psychosis, and Substance Abuse' which was a series of four research papers published in a leading journal in the field of medicine. One of the most famous research papers is 'The Beliefs and Controversies Regarding People With Mental Illnesses and Mental Health.' This article shows that people's belief that people with mental ill ness are not capable of being successful in society is actually a symptom of a larger problem that must be addressed. The next article will be on public perceptions. The next time you hear the term 'mental illness' you can rest assured that you have already learned something new.
